The Proud Webweaver
Long ago, in a cave deep in the forest, there was a community of webweavers. Life among the webweavers was very routine. Spin a web, catch your prey, eat your prey, repair your web. This was how they lived. Each webweaver would pick a spot in the cave for her own web.
One day,a webweaver spun a particularly beautiful web. Everyone in the cave complimented her on it. She was so proud that she kept guard over the web and would not allow anything to come near it out of fear it would be destroyed. She spent her time adding decorative touches here and there. Day after day she improved the web, driven by her pride.
So great was her obsession that she did not realize that she was wasting away without food. Finally, she just starved to death hanging there on her web. Without anyone to maintain the web, it deteriorated and its remnants and hers fell to the cave floor and went to dust.
Commentary on "The Proud Webweaver"
When I was very young, I did not understand that these stories were actually analogies about Wookiees. I would listen to them and think "a webweaver would never starve itself to death". Only later did I understand why we have these stories. They are an entertaining way to teach important lessons to our people.
It is not surprising that these stories have survived for centuries virtually unchanged. They are so familiar to every Wookiee that we can take it for granted that everyone has heard them. And, they have actually found their ways into our everyday expressions we use in conversation.
For example, when a young warrior is showing off his new armor it would not be unusual for someone to say "Be careful, you are acting like the webweaver." Everyone would laugh and understand that the warrior has been accused of being too prideful.
On Kashyyyk the forest guides our lives. The forest is a dangerous place. Survival is the most important thing that should be on every Wookiee's mind. So, we use stories like these to remind ourselves what is important.
